Anya George is a senior associate in our Dispute Resolution Group in Zurich. Her practice focuses on international commercial arbitration and litigation. She has represented states, state-owned entities and private companies in complex multi-jurisdictional disputes across a wide range of sectors with particular emphasis on energy, natural resources, insurance and reinsurance contracts and manufacturing and sales agreements. She has acted as counsel and legal secretary to arbitral tribunals in numerous ad hoc and institutional arbitrations (including under the ICC, LCIA, UNCITRAL and Swiss Rules) and has represented parties in commercial litigation proceedings before the Swiss courts, including the Supreme Court.
Anya is recognised for her arbitration and dispute resolution work in leading directories. She has been recommended as a Rising Star (Commercial Arbitration) in Expert Guides and is ranked in Who's Who Legal's Future Leaders in Arbitration (2017).
Anya is trilingual (English/French/German) and dual qualified as a Swiss attorney and a solicitor of England and Wales. After graduating with honors from the University of Fribourg (lic.iur., 2005), she went on to receive a master’s in international relations from the University of Cambridge (M.Phil., 2006). Prior to being admitted to the bar, she completed her legal traineeship in a large business law firm in Zurich and worked as a law clerk at the District Court of Horgen. She joined Schellenberg Wittmer as an associate in August 2010.
In 2013/2014, Anya worked as a foreign associate in the international arbitration department of Clifford Chance LLP in London, where she gained experience in investment treaty arbitration and complex arbitrations in the financial sector. In addition, she spent three months with leading barristers at Essex Court Chambers in London, taking part in a number of trials before the courts of England and Wales.
Anya regularly publishes in the area of international commercial arbitration. She is a co-chair of the British Swiss Chamber of Commerce's Young Professionals Group, Zurich, and a member of several professional associations, including the Swiss Arbitration Association, ASA Below 40, the LCIA, YIAG, ICDR Young & International and ICC YAF. She is also an Associate of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators.
