Christian Girod is a partner in Schellenberg Wittmer’s Geneva office, where he heads the Dispute Resolution Group. His main areas of practice are commercial litigation, as well as estate and trust disputes.

His practice is almost exclusively devoted to international matters and covers a broad range of issues. They include: pre-litigation strategic advice; representation of parties in cases related, inter alia, to estate and trusts, private banking disputes, international commodity sales, manufacturing contracts, partnerships, charter parties, corporate liability, insurance; enforcement of foreign judgments; and the securing and freezing of assets in aid of domestic and international proceedings.

Christian Girod is a Certified Specialist SBA Inheritance Law, a Trust and Estate Practitioner (STEP) and a member of several professional associations, such as the Union Internationale des Avocats (UIA), the Swiss Arbitration Association and the Société Romande des Avocats Spécialistes en Droit des Successions.

He graduated from the School of Law of the University of Geneva in 1982 and, after being admitted to the bar in Switzerland in 1985, earned a Master of Laws from Harvard Law School the following year. Christian Girod joined Schellenberg Wittmer in 1986 and became a partner in 1994.
 

Selected deals and cases

  • Representation of a Swiss Foundation as defendant in relation to estates opened in 1928 and 1968 which involve artworks and other assets confiscated by the Nazis in the 1930's and are governed by the laws of different states
  • Representation of an insurance broker sued by a former client in relation to a complex insurance scheme (claims totaling several tens of millions Swiss francs)
  • Representation of a bank sued by a former client in relation to multiple transfers initiated by a person holding a proxy on the account
  • Representation of a bank sued by a former client in relation to investment proposals made by the bank, their implementation and subsequent investments (claims totaling several tens of millions Swiss francs)
  • Representation of an alleged debtor opposing to an attachment order obtained by a creditor on more than two dozens of accounts (claims totaling several hundreds of millions Swiss francs)
